BitComet Yellow To Green Light Guide - Updated 25 January 2008

A lot of people keep asking how to turn the yellow light green...

Someone ask me what the yellow light is and here it is...

Did you see the yellow light there? Blocked:

You might want to try restarting your router and check the port again by pointing your mouse and right click on the yellow light and select 'Check again' a couple of times first to try it out... if that doesn't work then read on...

Well... here's a step by step guide that maybe can help you turn that yellow light if you do it right... This guide is for BitComet v0.98 and Windows XP... If you got something other than XP then you figure this out yourself...

First of all... get the new version of BitComet v0.98 here...

After finished installing BitComet open the Options Menu...

And then set your 'Listen Port' above '40000'... For this guide I'll use '60000' and you can use that port too if you like... Moving on...

### ### ###

(This has nothing to do with the green light status but it's for your optimal upload/download max speed)

Set your 'Global Max Upload Rate' (depends on your line speed)

The higher the better but not too high...

For this guide I'll set it to '36' 'kB/s' because I got a 512 'kb/s' upload line speed...

Usually if you got a 512 'kb/s' upload speed you need to divide it to 8 and then set it to 80% of your calculated speed in there but the easiest way to do it is to divide it by 10 and you got your optimal speed in 'kB/s'

So if my upload speed is 512 'kb/s' then devide it by 10 then I got 51 'kB/s' right... Now you ask me why I put 36 'kB/s' here right? This is why...

You can test your upload speed here... Make sure you close all open applications that use internet connectivity before you run the Speed Test to get an accurate line speed... When I tested my line speed there I got 360+ 'kb/s' so I divide it by 10 then I got it 36 'kB/s' Did you notice the 'kb/s' and 'kB/s' it's the letter 'b' and 'B' so... 'b' means 'bit' and 'B' means 'Byte'... see the different? the Speed Test use 'bit' and BitComet use 'Byte'...

### ### ###

Moving on now...

Now... if you installed eMule plugins then you have to set your 'Listen Port' here also above '40000' and I'll use '60006' for this guide... If you don't have the eMule plugins installed then you can skip this or you can get the eMule plugins here... (recommended) After that... get going...

Follow and set with the above options... I'm so lazy to key in all the options name here... That's it for the BitComet configurations... After this you have to set your router settings... Coming up next...

### ### ###

(This has nothing to do with the green light status but it's for your optimal upload/download MAX speed)

This is an optional settings if you want your download limit to get the MAX limit... You can set your 'TCP/IP Limit' - 'New Half-Open Limit' to '200' and tick/select the 'Disable the system file protections' radio button then click 'Apply'... (you have to restart your PC for this)

If you update your Windows with the SP2 updates then you'll get something like this...

Your 'TCPIP.SYS' version '3244' then BitComet can't modified the 'TCP/IP Limit' here... There's a way to override that...

You can download this patch at http://www.lvllord.de/ and patched the 'TCPIP.SYS' version '3244' file... (Not Recommended)

Some AntiVirus software will detect the patch file as a trojan/virus but according to the author of the patch... It's not a trojan/virus because usually a trojan/virus work the same way to spread the infections...

I'll use this method if you got the file 'TCPIP.SYS' version '3244' but if you got a 'TCPIP.SYS' version '2892' you don't have to do this...

Here's the way I do it...

Start -> Control Panel -> Add or Remove Programs

Select the 'Show updates'

And you'll see all the Windows updates file there...

Find the 'Updates for Windows XP (KB941644)' and click 'Remove'

After that restart your PC and then you'll get this...

Now you can change the 'TCP/IP Limit' and enjoy your MAX upload/download speed...

Change the 'New Half-Open Limit' to '200' and click 'Apply'

Restart your PC and you're done...

### ### ###

Now... moving on to the router settings... Make sure you close your BitComet before you do this... For this guide I'll use the router type 'Billion-Bipac-5112S' (if you're using the same thing then you got lucky) If not you can find your router type and set it here depends on your router type... Select your router type and follow the link... then choose 'BitComet' in the page link there and follow the instructions for your router settings...

For the 'Billion-Bipac-5112S' router follow this step...

Open up your web browser and enter your router IP Address in the Address box... If you don't know your IP then open a 'DOS Prompt' if you don't know what a 'DOS prompt' is then you don't have to set anything just close this and burn your PC...

In your 'DOS prompt' key in 'ipconfig' and you'll get something like this...

Can you see your IP Address now? '192.168.1.3' that's it...

Default Gateway... that's your router address...

For this guide it is '192.168.1.1' maybe you got another IP... (memorized it)

Now open up your web browser and enter your router IP Address in the Address box... Enter your username... usually 'admin' then your password...

Or you can click this link http://192.168.1.254 if your router IP is '192.168.1.254' (the default IP for 'Billion-Bipac-5112S')

You'll get this Panel here below...

You'll find this in the 'Advanced Setup' - 'NAT' tab... now select the 'Virtual Server' can you see it? Then you'll get this thing here...

So... can you figure it out yet... If you can't then you got to go and take a bath and cool yourself first then read this guide again...

1. Select 'Rule Index' - '1'

2. In the 'Application' you can put anything you want and select 'PPTP'

3. Set the Start/End Port (you know what to do)

4. In 'Local IP Address' put in your IP (did I tell you to memorized it earlier?)

5. Click the 'Save' button at the bottom page... Done...

If you got the eMule plugins then set it here too...

1. Select 'Rule Index' - '2'

2. In the 'Application' you can put anything you want and select 'PPTP'

3. Set the Start/End Port (you know what to do)

4. In 'Local IP Address' put in your IP (did I tell you to memorized it earlier?)

5. Click the 'Save' button at the bottom page... Done...

Now you have to restart your router... After that check your BitComet and see if you got a remote connections... If you got it then your router has been configured correctly and your port has been forwarded succesfully...

And if you installed the eMule plugins...

You'll see this thing here...

Last thing to do... Open your BitComet... If it doesn't get the GREEN light that you've been dreaming about then open your windows firewall and check the settings...

Start -> Control Panel -> Windows Firewall... See below...

If you didn't get something like that then just DISABLE your firewall and you're done... And you can stop dreaming now because you got your GREEN light now...

ATTENTIONS!!! PeerGuardian's users...

If you use PeerGuardian and got a lot of block lists...

Recently BitComet IP Server has been added in the lists...

Check your PeerGuardian if it's blocking the name 'ip-us.bitcomet.org'

If it does then you'll have to allow it or you'll get a GREY light (unknown)

Open your PeerGuardian...

Click the 'List Manager' then you'll see this or maybe more...

If you didn't have a 'lists\permallow.p2b' Permanent Allows...

Then you have to click 'Create List' to create one... If you got it then select/highlight it and click 'Open List' and you'll see this...

Now click 'Add' and put in the settings above then 'Save'... And you're done...

If you didn't have it and would like to have it... here it is...

PeerGuardian 2.0 Beta 6c (01/30/2007)

http://phrosty.phoenixlabs.org/pg2-070309.exe

Someone ask me what the green light is and here it is...

Did you see the green light there? WAN:

And this is my average speed when I'm GREEN...

My MAX limit that my ISP provide is is about 1536 kb/s (that's about 150 kB/s more or less) and I MAX it out as you can see... Sometimes I got over 300 kB/s and once I got about 1000 kB/s just once... and it last for about 3 minutes or so then it got to the average speed again... (don't know when that's going to happened again)

That's all for now...
